Home-made ice cream

Home science experiments for mothers of elementary school children

Tae: "Mom, can we make that ice cream again?"
Tae likes eating.
Mom: "You mean 'ice cream rolling'? OK, we can do it."
Rolling Ice Cream
Tae and Mom put materials for ice cream into a empty tea container and then shake the container well.
Then they put the tea container, ice, and salt into a big Tupperware. Now it's ready for rolling.
Tae and Mom sit at both sides of the Tupperware and starts rolling the tea container.
Mom: "Maybe we can have nice ice cream, if we roll more."
Tae: "I can not wait. I want eat now!"
Mom: "Tae, you work hard? So you can eat ice cream sooner."
Satoshi, a three year old little brother, came up.
Satoshi: "I want to join."
Tae: "Satoshi, shall we do together?"

After rolling for 20 min, our ice cream is ready to eat!
Finally it's time to eat.
Toshi: "It was very delicious. But I wonder it may be cheaper to buy from a shop. We used tons of salt. And it'll take only 10 min to go to buy ice cream from a shop."
Tae: "Toshi, you don't get it. Our ice cream is so delicious, because it is home-made."
Mom: "Tae, you are so nice to me."
Tae: "By the way, what was this experiment about?"
Mom: "I guess we learned our home made ice cream was delicious!!"

Materials

    For 4 servings

Caution!

If the plastic container is too large, you need a lot of ice to fill.

How to make: step#1

How to make ice cream

20 min for preparation and 20 min for rolling

  1. Wash inside the can very well. Then beat an egg in the can.

  2. Add 150 ml of milk, 75 ml of heavy cream, and 45 g of sugar.

  3. Cover the can with two layers of wrap and put the lid on.
(To prevent salt water from leak into the can.)

  4. Shake the can well.

  5. Place the can into a large plastic container. Fill the gap between the can and container with salt and ice.
The amount of salt is about one third of ice. (Be aware you need a lot of salt.)
    How to make: step#2

  6. Close tightly the plastic container with its lid.

  7. Wrap the container with a towel and fasten it using a rubber band or a rope.

  8. Roll the container on a flat surface for 20 min.

  9. At the mid-point (10 min), add more ice and salt into the container.

  10. Shake the can. If you don't hear any sound, your ice cream is done!
Make sure you wipe the very salty outer surface of the can before you open.
You can take ice cream out of the can with a knife.

* Delicious ice cream should contain plenty of air.
The rolling helps to mix ice cream with air.
Therefore it is essential you leave some air inside.

* Recommendation: You may want to make chocolate ice cream.
You warm up milk, mix with a tablespoon of chocolate powder, and then follow the same procedure above. It's delicious!

* A can conduct heat very well. That also means it'll become cold faster when ice is around it.

* In school, 4th grade children learn a fact that, when salt is mixed into ice water, the temperature goes down to -20 centigrade.

When we are enjoying most, our minds work sharply.

I don't know why, but when I'm doing something exciting, my body and brain can work hard. I have more patience, too. My older son likes video games. My daughter likes eating. And my younger son likes playing with me. Knowing what they like most is important for me, because they can tolerate something hard for something they enjoy. It is my skill to mix works with enjoyment.
